Henry The 8th Song

The Henry The 8th song, most commonly known as “I'm Henry The VIII, I am” (Henry sometimes spelled as Henery due to the Cockney pronunciation) is a 1910 song by Fred Murray and R. P. Weston. The song was mostly composed of repeating lines:

Henry The 8th Song

I'm Henery the 8th I am,
Henery the 8th I am, I am

Henry The 8th Song

The preceding stanza especially shows the choice of women that Henry is in. the song explains that Henry's wife has been married seven times prior to their marriage. In some parts of the song, there are the occasional additional lines to make the song sound a little less repetitive.

The song shows the not-so-good side of King Henry VIII; the British king known for having had 6 wives in total. The song also shows that Henry the Eight is gluttonous as can be read in the stanza:

I'm Henery the Eight, I am, I am,

I've been eating since six a.m.

For dessert I'll have dinner again,

                                        My name's synonymous with gluttony

I'll always eat a turkey or a ham.

The song was so popular that in 1965, the group Herman's Hermit's revival landed the group its second number 1 song on Billboard! British star Joe Brown also recorded the song in 1961 and made it much known in the pop community.

There have been several changes both in the lyric and the music over time. On the older versions of the song, Henry is spelled as Henery because the music requires it to be pronounced in three syllables. However, in Herman's Hermit's revival until today, Henery became Henry.

Due to its popularity and repeating lines, Spike even threatened Dracula that he will sing the song infinitely in the comic book Spike vs. Dracula.

It may sound so fascinating when we go trough the lines and even if we could actually hear the actual song, you would wonder where Henry the 8th took his idea about this song and the reason for creating it.  In general, Henry the 8th song has become a piece of identity of the king and later a part of important history.  I wonder if there would any modern artists who could make up a song out of these lines.
